TOWN HISTORY

The town of Northmere began as a small fish and trade post sat atop a rugged stretch of coastline just north of Boston Massachusetts, founded in 1634 by English Colonists. Its natural deepwater harbor and sheltered coves, constituted the perfect landscape for the settlement to quickly grow into a modest maritime village where fishing thrived and life was peaceful, until it no longer was.

By the late 1600s, the town had taken on a more shadowy reputation, with its remote location making an ideal mecca for pirates and plunderers who prowled the Atlantic. The British Crown however frowned upon such acts, but Northmere's leaders turned a blind eye so long as the ships came bearing gold, spices, and goods to trade. Taverns boomed, warehouses overflowed, and the town's fortunes rose exponentially. By the early 17th century, Northmere was a well-known "Pirate's Nest" a place of secret codes, false ledgers, and ships that sailed under many flags.

As piracy waned across the seas and the American colonies moved toward their independence, Northmere made decisions to transform its ways. Riches that had been accumulated during its illicit heyday was invested in stately homes, shipyards, and cultural institutions. By the early 19th century, the town had turned itself into a refined coastal retreat, one today that carefully balances its present with its past. Cobbled streets and historic harbors tell tales of both colonial resilience and high seas rebellion, making it one of New Englands more storied and picturesque coastal towns.
